When people think of being in good health, most associate that with physical health. Some people just don’t seem to grasp that mental health and physical health are connected. There is a reason why they say eating well and exercising does a mind AND body good. In order to understand what it means to be in good health, you have to consider both. If you have any chronic physical conditions, this can greatly affect your mental health and vice versa. For example, someone with clinical depression can develop detrimental eating habbits and may avoid exercising.
While someone may want to focus on one or the other, we are here to tell you that both are equally important! We want to outline some of the ways a lack of mental and/or physical health can affect each other.
How Mental Health Affects Physical Health
We found a great article in Men’s Health that shared some insight:
If someone has depression, there is a 67% increased risk of death from heart disease. There is also a 50% increased risk of death from cancer. Those with schizophrenia double their risk of death from heart disease and are 3 times more likely to die from a respiratory disease.
They say that as a result of mental health conditions like these, individuals are less likely to receive physical healthcare.
Both Diet and Exercise are Vital
It goes without saying that being physically active is healthy. When you exercise, you release endorphins in your brain. By simply going for a short jog, or even walking around a shopping mall can increase your energy and put you in a great mood! In order to benefit from physical activity, you need to move your body and use your muscles. Walking down the street to your mailbox will just not cut it in this case. If you want to release some endorphins, you need to put some effort into it! Even if you aren’t a fan of exercising, working out for 30 minutes a day 3-4 times a week can be enough for you to feel better mentally.
Working out and moving your body need to go hand in hand with your diet. In order to be able to do those things, you need to be in decent shape. Eating fried food, or a ton of carbs everyday isn’t going to get you there. Think proteins; the keto diet provides you with the tools to not only eat better, but to enjoy a high fat diet, without compromising your taste buds. We all love carbs, but they aren’t great for us and decrease our energy levels substantially.
