I felt that I was missing out, and that if I wanted to eat better forever, I couldn’t give up the foods I loved otherwise it wouldn’t work. I was allowed to indulge on the rare occasion.
I slowly started to eat the things that I missed. I would go shopping and grab a chocolate bar, a bag of lollies, a sausage roll, or a pastry.
Justifying it to myself was easy. It was only one thing, and I was eating keto at home, no one knew about it, so why should I worry? It wouldn’t be enough to stop my progress.
It did, and I got worse. I would snack more and more each time I went out. Then as I had eaten badly, I would make bad choices for the family dinner, and before I knew it, we were eating burgers weekly, pizza was a regular event (I am ashamed to say, more often than once a week)
All the weight loss I had achieved disappeared in 2 months. I felt devastated each time I weighed myself.
It’s still something to always be aware of, but I am slowly finding solutions that come close to what I’m missing.
The good thing with keto and the foods that you can eat, is that they taste great. So, if you can get over the fact that the texture isn’t quite the same, you can enjoy a delicious tasting meal that is good for your macros. I often have to remind myself that I feel much better after eating these substitutions – and the more you do it the more your body will learn and start to crave them!
It is trial and error each time as you find the ideal replacement, but as you test & trial each new substitute, you gain understanding of how the ingredients work together and can easily substitute without looking up a recipe.
I’ve listed below some of the substitutes that I use on a regular basis at home and hope they can help you too.
