I have to admit, I don’t, and it’s become a massive problem for our family. I’ve struggled with meal planning many times, but the thoughts of ‘I don’t feel like this tonight’ come in to play, and we just wing it, or the kids complain about not having pasta for a day, or whinge about having cauliflower again!
So, I change my mind.
Which means, lots of delivery, or buying what we want that day on the way home from school pickup, which then usually means a bunch of snacks, soft drinks or takeaway as an afternoon snack for the kids.
It’s not good, for many reasons, but here are the big 4 for us.
It’s not Keto – so many carbs. Carbs are delicious, but carbs for us are very bad. Once we get started on carbs we spiral into a carb fest which becomes never ending. The kids love it!
It’s making us sick – various ailments that only appear when we eat badly, along with lethargy and general feelings of being under the weather.
It’s so expensive – delivery, takeaway & eating out are expensive! I do not want to search my bank account for how much we’ve spent on a particular delivery service since it became available in our suburb. Scary.
It’s wasteful – we throw a lot of food away every week. Our regular bin is full to the brim every week.
It’s been a while since we went full keto in our house. We’ve had quite a bit on these last few months, and we’ve allowed our schedule to dictate bad food choices.
It’s no excuse, it’s our fault 100%.
But we can also make it better.
Meal Planning seems to be the key, all the issues we have will resolve with a good meal plan.
So that’s what I am going to do. Meal Plan.
Here are my goals for this week.
- Don’t be overly ambitious. I read somewhere to make only 1 new meal a week, the rest should be your usual meals. I know that in the past, the effort to create 5 or 6 new meals a week was overwhelming and a major contributor to our failure to stick to a meal plan.
- Understand it will take time to get things right. The first few weeks may be a little hard and time consuming, but this is OK. We’ll get there.
- Avoid the fall-back to unhealthy eating. Find a meal that can be made quickly without too much hassle, so when life gets too busy, we can still eat well without much effort. Our go-to is breakfast for dinner. Bacon, Eggs Avocado, Haloumi – yum!
