Being on the Keto diet you’ve probably seen or heard to term macro before, but what does it actually mean? Getting used to a new diet and lifestyle can be really difficult. There are a lot of new things to educate yourself on that will help you achieve the highest level of success on your new journey. Someone who may not have been into fitness and nutrition prior to embarking on a new diet may find it difficult finding a place to start. This is where we come in! The purpose of our blog is to educate, inform and most of all make sure your journey with Ultim and the keto diet helps you reach your goal.
Something that is important to know while on the keto diet is the concept of macros. We are sure if you’ve been reading about the keto diet online the word “macros” has probably been come up several times, but what are they?
The term “macros” stands for Macronutrients when it comes to nutrition and the keto diet. They are the parts of food that fuels our body gives us energy. Macronutrients include carbs, fat and protein. Understanding macros are important when on the keto diet as they help you stay in ketosis and help your body burn fat.
Carbs are the only macros you don’t need to survive. As we’ve mentioned in previous posts, carbs are filled with fatty and amino acids. They are made up of various sugars and starches and this is obviously not great when you want to be in ketosis. Because fibre is actually a carbohydrate but doesn’t count towards your final carb intake.
Protein is super important in your overall health. It helps tissue repair, your immune system, it makes essential hormones and helps grow and preserve muscle mass. I think everyone can agree proteins are vital to our survival. When you are on the keto diet, you need to eat enough protein to preserve your lean body mass. When someone is trying to shed those pounds, not only are you losing weight, you often lose muscle mass as well as fat. Your real goal should be to lose fat and preserve the muscle mass you already have.
Our bodies need a certain amount of fat in our diet for growth, energy and absorbing various vitamins such as vitamin A. Dietary fats also help us stay full and make our food more enjoyable taste wise. Dietary fats are beyond filling and that’s why we crave them when we diet. Think about all those low-fat diets you’ve tried in the past and think about how hungry you were! If only you knew eating fat is fine, as long as you are eating the right fats that not only satisfy your hunger and keep you full, but still help you lose weight.
